  • New Grocery Store in Bensonhurst

Vucciria Food & Gourmet on 86th Street

This brightly-colored sign doesn’t look like it belongs to the grocery store at 2275 86th Street. After a little digging, it seems like space and sign are owned by local produce businessman Silvio LoVerde, who registered Vucciria as a gourmet foods brand under the banner Orchard King Corp Specialty Gourmet, which houses a few other of LoVerde’s produce ventures.

LoVerde is a  fifth-generation farmer and green grocer, according to his LinkdIn profile, which works out well since his last name actually means “the green” in Spanish.

Tell us, have you been to Vucciria/Orchard King?

Its very nice. Their produce is the same as Orchard King, but because of the larger space, spread out more. Love the new space inside. They have regular checkouts and friendly people there. They have a smaller version of homemade goods and treats than Cherry Hill, opposite this store.

Just bought a chocolate filled croissant from Vucciria today. OMG, probably one of the best chocolate fillings ever and it was a generous filling. You have to try that and their gelato..I had the pineapple and it was delicious!

Vucciria is a great place to shop, staff are very friendly, helpful and so clean. The prices are reasonable as well as the vast selections of fresh fruits and vegatables. Cherry Hill has lots of Russian fare, Vucciria has free samples to taste before purchasing any fresh items they have for the day. With the many green grocers on 86 Street from Bay Parkway to 23rd Avenue I don’t have to worry about my produce smelling like fish every time I get it home. Now if only another fresh butcher to open on this block instead of another fruit store it would be ideal.

Come now BensonhurstBean! I’m an avid reader but LoVerde isn’t “Spanish for the green” it’s Italian (it may be Spanish as well, but in the context of this particular story it must be noted as Italiano!)!!! Vucciria is the name of the open-air market in Palermo, Sicily where shoppers purchase many of the same items you can buy at the Vucciria on 86th Street. The owners is Sicilian himself, hence the inspiration for his Vucciria. It’s a great place to shop: great prices, very good pastries and focacceria style foods for lunch or dinner.

You are totally right. But aren’t they all romance languages anyhow ;) Yes, I see your point and thanks for the tip about Palermo. It just happens that my Spanish is better than my Italian.
