The New York City Departments of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and Environmental Protection (DEP) issued an advisory informing the public of a sewer break in Bay Ridge, Gravesend Bay, from the mouth of Coney Island Creek to the
    Verrazano Bridge.

It stated that the water was not fit for recreational activities such as swimming, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing or any other water activity that would entail possible direct contact with the water. The advisory also discouraged persons from consuming fish caught in the Bay while the advisory is in place.

As a result of the completion of an emergency pumping operation near 92nd and Third Avenue in Bay Ridge, NYCDOHMH and NYCDEP have determined there is no longer any need to avoid recreational use of Gravesend Bay and the advisory issued yesterday is now no longer in place. It’s now safe to go back in the water.

FYI I was bike riding along there just this morning and it is definitely STILL gag worthy. Of course a select group of good “citizens” were not deterred by the horrendous smell and went on their merry way trying to catch one of those toxic three headed fish like from The Simpsons.

well, the “emergency pumping operation” is a failure and the discharging is back in full force. please report this. i saw raw sewage gushing out this afternoon and the smell is toxic and unbearable. and people are still fishing because there are no longer any warning signs posted. this water is clearly not healthy for any recreational activities and it’s not even healthy or safe to be within a 20 block radius and breathe this toxic air. the DEP is responsible and needs to be held responsible and taken to task. please follow up on this story- it’s worse than ever right now
