Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, City Council Member Domenic Recchia and Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President Carlo Scissura all gathered for the groundbreaking a of a new BJs Wholesale Club in Gravesend.

Since Superstorm Sandy struck late last October, the time-table for the construction was moved up in an effort to spur job growth in the area.

“By moving up the construction time table and creating 300 well-paying jobs, they are helping to drive the economic recovery in South Brooklyn—especially in nearby Coney Island—one of the areas hardest hit by the storm,” said Markowitz in a press release.

As we previously reported, the megastore, where you can buy everything from computers to over-sized boxes of cereal, will occupy a 200,000 square foot space at 1752 Shore Parkway. It gained the City Council’s approval in September 2011, and is being developed by Thor Equities. It’s not without controversy: some locals are concerned that it will siphon customers away from mom-and-pop business owners.

Google Maps show 1752 Shore Parkway is west of 24 Avenue which is the Bath Beach neighborhood, not Gravesend.

my parents owned a small mom and pop, next door to it was my grandmothers small store…these neighborhood shops and the others around them had been in business for decades and decades but when ‘Kings Plaza was built most of the long standing mom and pop businesses lost significant income and finally, one by one they all closed. BJ’s is going to wreck havoc with neighborhood mom and pops

I wish THOR would just go away – maybe they should leave Bklyn alone and go mess up manhattan

The bay parkway and shore parkway intersection is already congested on a regular day…. Add BJ’s and in the summer time that area plus both directions of the highway will be even more congested.

Add the Dept. of Sanitation Waste Transfer Station planned to be located down the block as well as the congestion already evident….what fun lies ahead for any neighborhood person exiting the Belt at Bay Parkway.

I would love to shop small for my groceries, but how many times can a person pay three times more than the big box stores only to come home with chicken smelling of bleach and strategically placed fruit stickers to cover the rotting before frustration sets in. If someone could name a mom and pop grocery store that doesn’t sell closeout grocery items at jacked up prices, then I would declare my opposition to BJs.
