The Irwin Meyer American Legion Headquarters Band, conducted by Sean King, will perform a concert in the New Utrecht Reformed Church this weekend.

The free event — which is sponsored by the Friends of Historic New Utrecht — will take place at in the parish house at 18th Avenue and 84th Street on Sunday, May 22, at 2:30pm.

The Band has changed its full name to honor the late Irwin Meyer, the Band’s conductor and music director for 37 years, who died last May at the age of 96, a month after his last concert with the band on April 26 — also at New Utrecht. The band continues in its 88th year under the baton of Mr. King and leadership of manager Jim Buchanan. An all volunteer group, the band’s members come from a variety of backgrounds and range in age from 85 to 14 years.

The 1892 Parish House is part of the landmarked campus of the New Utrecht Reformed Church, home to a congregation organized by Dutch settlers in 1677, which also includes the 1827 church — now undergoing interior repairs and restoration — and the 1783 New Utrecht Liberty Pole.

The May 22 concert is one in a series of free concerts and history-related events offered each year by the Friends of Historic New Utrecht. Anyone interested in learning more about the concert and other Friends activities or about New Utrecht’s landmarks and its history can contact (718) 256-7173 or [email protected], and to visit the Friend of Historic New Utrecht’s website or on Facebook.
