Stars and Stripes Regular Democratic Club announced its new president at its annual dinner dance this week.

Irene Chu, a Bensonhurst resident and club member, has been active in the Chinese communities of Bensonhurst and Sunset Park through her work as a journalist, a community liaison for Assemblyman Peter Abbate, and member of Community Board 11, according to a press release from the club.

The Stars and Stripes Club, based at 7321 15th Avenue, is the regular Democratic club of the 49th Assembly District, which includes Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, and Sunset Park.

“I am so pleased to congratulate Irene Chu for becoming our newest Club President,” said Abbate. “Her work ethic and community ties make her the perfect choice to represent the Stars & Stripes Club. As the 49th Assembly District changes, our club must continue to represent the community and celebrate its diversity.”

The appointment of Chu is the latest indicator of the rising political clout of southwest Brooklyn’s rapidly growing Asian American population.

Chu will head up the new slate of officers, including long time club members Nicholas Zimmitti as vice president and executive secretary-treasurer Kelly Steier.

Other local elected officials, including Councilman Vincent Gentile, praised the club’s selection.

“It is exciting to hear the news that Irene Chiu will be the next President of the Stars and Stripes Democratic club,” said Gentile. “She is a rising star in our community and a former local journalist, and most recently my choice to serve on Community Board 11. I wish her the very best and I am excited to work with her on behalf of the community.”

“The Stars & Stripes Club is thrilled to have Irene Chu as our next club president. She will uphold the tradition of being a strong advocate for the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst and upholding the democratic values our club represents.” said District Leader Joseph Bova.

Victoria Kelly, who is running for female district leader alongside Bova added, “I am excited to work with her!”
