Happy Holidays!

"When Worlds Collide" by periwinklekog via Flickr

With Passover beginning tonight at sundown, and Easter this Sunday, all of us here at Bensonhurst Bean want to wish our readers a happy and safe holiday weekend!

My favorite nickname for this dish is the “Big Mac Salad,” although that name probably doesn’t do it justice. While this recipe combines beef, lettuce and dressing in a way that’s similar to the famous McSandwich, you could say it includes ingredients of a somewhat different quality.

Instead of using mysterious McMeat, Colleen incorporates juicy, well-seasoned cuts of flank steak into a bowl of crunchy veggies for a low carb meal that’s both tasty and healthy.

If you’re like me, and like to load down an otherwise innocent salad with high calorie dressing, try Walden Farms Calorie Free French Dressing for a low (virtually no) calorie alternative.

While we didn’t plan on doing another Coney Island story today, with summer on its way and Coney Island still in a transitional period, there’s simply an above average amount of chatter out there. With so many changes on the horizon, we want to give Bensonhurst Bean’s readers a heads up on what to expect at the beach this summer.

Coney Island developer Joe Sitt – who has become very unpopular with preservationists in recent years – says the suburban mall-like building erected by his firm Thor Equities on the Stillwell Avenue site of an historic structure he had demolished is only temporary, and is just one of many changes (shudder) in store for the People’s Playground. The contentious race for disgraced local pol Carl Kruger’s former state senate seat – which represents a district that will no longer exist at the end of the year due to redistricting – is still undecided more than two weeks after the March 20, special election.

In the latest twist, Councilman Fidler’s campaign – which has unofficially pulled ahead based on the recommendations of a panel of judges – is alleging voter fraud by a Storobin consultant. Continue Reading »

The unidentified victim was taken to a nearby hospital, presumably Coney Island Hospital.

The suspect is described by police as being between 25 and 32 years old, and between 5-feet-9-inches and 6 feet tall with a medium build. According to the sketch shown above, the suspect appears to be black with a medium complexion.

The following is a press release from the office of City Councilman David Greenfield:

Greenfield Demands DOT Repave Worst Local Streets and Stop Permitting Repaved Streets to Be Cut Up

Brooklyn – Councilman David G. Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) yesterday questioned New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) officials over the unacceptable conditions of several local streets and urged the DOT to have them repaved immediately. Greenfield’s comments, which came during a City Council oversight hearing of the DOT aimed at examining the state of the city’s roads, focused on several streets in the district that have long been the source of frustration for local drivers. Specifically, Greenfield called on the DOT to ensure that 50th Street between Fort Hamilton Parkway and 20th Avenue, 46th Street between 13th Avenue and 17th Avenue, and Avenue P between McDonald Avenue and Ocean Parkway are immediately repaved so that they are safe and passable for motorists and cyclists. While the phrase, “a rising tide lifts all boats” has often been used in defense of tax cuts for those with higher incomes, a newly released report concludes that a slight increase in income for New York’s lowest earners could add a significant boost to the state’s economy. Continue Reading »
