This week’s image comes courtesy of reader Soo Koon Lee, who writes that “the dissonance of this photo is pretty funny.”

Here at Bensonhurst Bean, we were quite shocked to learn that in these tough economic times, even the famous chef character seen on pizza boxes has to moonlight in order to make ends meet.

Lee caught up with the hardworking cuisinier, whose likeness was gracing a sign outside of local restaurant Istanbul [2202 86th St], slicing up delicious döner kebabs to appease the hungry lunchtime crowds.

Aaah… the humble yet delicious scone.

While many cultures throughout the world make a similar cookie-like breakfast bread, scones – in their American incarnation at least, originated in Scotland and Southwest England. They’re also considered a traditional dish in the Republic of Ireland – whose representatives chose the scone as their own contribution to the Café Europe cultural initiative.

According to Wikipedia, what we call a scone [pronounced like "cone" or "Joan"] is actually pronounced like “con” or “John” by around two-thirds of the British population, as well as most people in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

You know what goes with scones? Currants and orange zest. While Colleen’s recipe for a wonderfully moist mixture certainly doesn’t need any help, the small dried seedless grapes and the slight tangy acidity of the orange make this a perfect bread that you really don’t need to butter.

If you’re not sure which pronunciation of scone to use, the poem below reminds us that both are correct in their own way:

“I asked the maid in dulcet tone

To order me a buttered scone

The silly girl has been and gone

And ordered me a buttered scone.”

And while I don’t think I’ve ever actually had a proper Devonshire cream tea under the low afternoon sun, these scones freaking rock in the morning – whether fresh out of the oven or heated up later – with a hot cup of cappuccino.

The following is a press release from the office of U.S. Rep Jerrold Nadler:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) stated his profound opposition to H.CON.RES 112, the Republican FY2013 Budget Resolution.  The Republican Budget would harm middle- and working-class Americans, provide reckless tax cuts to big business and multi-millionaires, fail to invest in infrastructure, education, or our social safety net, and imperil the nation’s economic recovery. The following is a press release from the office of City Councilman David Greenfield:

New York – The New York City Council held a rare vote today to override Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s veto of a bill spearheaded by Councilman David G. Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) that bans the city’s use of impossible-to-remove stickers to punish drivers who allegedly violate alternate-side parking regulations. The bill was unanimously approved by the City Council in January and vetoed by the mayor last month. At today’s Stated Council meeting, the council voted unanimously in favor of overriding the Mayor’s veto. As a result, Greenfield’s bill is now law, and the city is no longer allowed to plaster these garish neon stickers on car windows for violations of alternate-side parking regulations. New York State Senate members are currently seeking nominations for the induction of new honorees into the New York State Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame.

State Senator Marty Golden sent out a press release this morning detailing the honors.

“The Senate takes this opportunity to honor the brave men and women who serve our nation and protect our freedom as members of the military,” Golden said in the statement. “The Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame pays tribute to all who serve, but also singles out for special recognition those whose sacrifices and service have helped make our nation and our community better places to live.”

The New York State Senate plans to honor a distinguished military veteran from New York State at a May 22, ceremony in the state capital at Albany. The inductee’s name, photograph, and biography are to become part of a special online exhibit, which will document their contribution to the nation for posterity.

In order to nominate a deserving individual, residents may request a nomination form by contacting either Senator Golden’s or Senator Diane Savino’s office:

All nominations must include a biography of approximately 250 words. The short bio must include the nominee’s rank and file at his/her time of discharge or end of military service, as well as any relevant awards or achievements. The nomination form must be accompanied with a high resolution photograph. The deadline for nominations is April 23, 2012.

A National Geographic listing of the country’s top ten boardwalks has designated Coney Island’s own Riegelmann Boardwalk as our nation’s number two.

The list crowned Atlantic City, whose own 1870 wooden walkway predates Coney’s by over 50 years, as the reigning Baron of Boardwalks.

Other beaches on the list include Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Ocean City, Maryland; and Venice Beach, California – which came in at numbers 3, 4, and 5 respectively.

There was no word on whether an asterisk* would be added once the Coney Island Plastic/Concretewalk is complete.
