The following is a press release from the office of U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler:

On Monday, February 6 at 11:00 a.m., Reps. Joe Crowley, Charles Rangel, Jerrold Nadler, along with New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Chairman Joseph Lhota, will speak out against House Republicans’ effort to cut federal support for public transit. The House GOP is expected to bring the federal transportation bill up for a vote on in the coming days and, as drafted, it will strip away the dedicated funding stream for the Mass Transit Account, which funds key investments in New York City’s subways Continue Reading »

Italian Wedding Soup is one of those great Transatlantic misunderstandings. The name might suggest that this was once the preferred dish at rustic wedding feasts in some picturesque Southern Italian locale. Unfortunately for our collective imagination, nothing could be further from the truth.

The name is a semi-literal translation of Minestra Maritata, or “married soup.” However, the mention of marriage simply refers to the successful pairing of green leafy vegetables with red meat.

While the name might come as a disappointment, this is one soup that never fails to please here in the Bensonhurst Kitchen. Colleen combines homemade meatballs, ditalini pasta, and an entire salad box of spinach (!) in a nutritious and delicious winter dish that makes for an energizing antidote to the common cold. If chicken soup is Jewish penicillin, then I hereby nominate this as its Italian equivalent. Click Here To Get The Dope On Making This Delicious Soup From Scratch

Councilman Vincent Gentile put out a press release yesterday commending Borough President Marty Markowitz for proposing the return and expansion of ferry service to the communities of Southern Brooklyn.

During his State of the Borough address from Brooklyn College Tuesday evening, Markowitz had stated that he intends to “push for the expansion of city ferry service to connect Manhattan to Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay, the Canarsie Pier and the 69th Street Pier in Bay Ridge.”

In his own statement, Gentile included a brief history of the 69th Street pier – which had been rebuilt to accommodate ferry commuters and yet still sits idle: Continue Reading »

The following is a press release from the office of U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the senior Northeastern Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, issued a stern warning in response to GOP plans to eliminate guaranteed funding for mass transit within H.R. 7, the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act. As H.R. 7 is currently drafted, mass transit is included within a new “Alternative Transportation Fund,” which would combine transit with numerous other programs and make the program dependent on general revenue.

“Transit is not an alternative mode of transportation and should not be treated as such Continue Reading »

A 17-year-old student at John Dewey High School (50 Ave X) in Gravesend was struck in the head with a metal pipe earlier today when he, along with two young friends, was jumped by three thieves who demanded that one of the teenagers give up his cell phone and a pair of headphones.

The incident occurred directly outside the school on Avenue X, according to website DNAinfo.

Meanwhile, the Post is saying that one 17-year-old victim was brought to Lutheran Medical Center in order to have the wounds on his head stapled closed. Another suffered minor scrapes to his face.

The teen who had his electronics stolen was reportedly not injured.

The three alleged perpetrators – ages 17, 18, and 21 – were rounded up by police shortly after the crime occurred. They were taken into custody for assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
