The above video, which was uploaded to Youtube by CongressmanNadler, shows Nadler on Fox News defending legislation that will cut private lending institutions out of the federal student loan process, as well as offer amnesty to students after a certain number of 20 years, rather than 25.
The law, which was to begin in 2014, will instead take effect next year, according to a press release from President Obama.
What’s your opinion on for-profit student loans?
How about tax-payer funded amnesty for debtors?
U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler represents New York’s 8th Congressional District, which includes Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea, SoHo, Greenwich Village, TriBeCa, the Financial District and Battery Park City. The above video, which can be found on Rep. Jerrold Nadler’s YouTube channel, shows him introducing a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA, which was signed into law by President Clinton during the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” 90′s.
Nadler is joined by the bill’s sponsors, which include Reps. Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin, Jared Polis, David Cicilline, and John Conyers. They would like to repeal DOMA, a 1996 law “that discriminates against lawfully married gay and lesbian couples.”

The above video, posted on Rep. Michael Grimm’s YouTube channel, includes his speech on the Veterans Dog Therapy Training Act.
The Staten Island Advance reported last week that Grimm’s legislation, which would help both disabled veterans as well as those suffering from post traumatic stress, passed the House of Representatives.
The bill would allow veterans suffering from PTSD to train the dogs, which will then be used by disabled veterans in order to help them with everyday tasks, such as shopping and crossing the street.
“This type of program, that allows veterans to help veterans, could have a tremendous impact in New York,” said Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn). “Ideally, I’d like to see [it] established at the Brooklyn VA Hospital, which provides care for many of the veterans in my district.”
U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm represents New York’s 13th Congressional District, which includes all of Staten Island. In Brooklyn, the 13th District includes parts of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst and Gravesend.
It looks like the Occupy Wall Street protesters won’t be getting kicked out after all.
The above video, posted on YouTube by karinmoveon, captures cheers as the crowd learns that Brookfield Properties, the company that maintains Zuccotti Park, called off the cleaning that would have prompted police to clear a section of the park.
Are you for OWS, against it, or maybe somewhere in between? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
After protesters brought in a cleaning crew yesterday to prevent an eviction by Mayor Bloomberg, Rep. Jerrold Nadler released the following to the press:
Nadler to Mayor Bloomberg: Protecting 1st Amendment Rights of Occupy Wall Street and Safeguarding Community Needs Are Not Mutually Exclusive
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), representative of Lower Manhattan and the Ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, responded to news that, on Friday, Mayor Bloomberg plans to evict Occupy Wall Street activists from their base at Zuccotti Park in Manhattan.
He issued the following statement:
“I am very concerned by Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to remove Occupy Wall Street activists (OWS) from Zuccotti Park tomorrow morning. I believe that protecting the rights of OWS and the needs of the Lower Manhattan community are not mutually exclusive. This situation can and must be resolved in a manner that addresses the concerns of local businesses and residents without violating either the First Amendment or New York’s long tradition of respecting public protest. It would be unfortunate, precisely because it is unnecessary, if this matter were not resolved in an amicable manner. Continue Reading »
Do you consider the anti-corporate sentiment of the Occupy Wall Street protests, as well as growing discontent about the widening gap between rich and poor to be a form of class warfare?
In the above video, posted on YouTube by CongressmanNadler, Rep. Jerrold Nadler spins the label back around at Congressional Republicans during an appearance on MSNBC, accusing them of “tax warfare” against the middle and working class.
What say you?

This morning, we spotted another new storefront on the corner of Bay Parkway and 65th Street. Unlike Pizza Daddy across the street, this convenient corner store appears to already be open for business.
What’s attracting all these new enterprises, you ask? Maybe it’s the eerily touching soundtrack of the promotional video below, which is presented by the building’s realtor.
The above video, from Fox 5, discusses the possibility of additional layoffs – in addition to an existing hiring freeze – for city workers as part of budget cuts requested by Mayor Bloomberg.
Are you or someone you know a city worker in danger of losing their job?

The Huffington Post reported earlier today that a suspect arrested for a pair of sexual assaults this weekend in Sunset Park might be connected to a string of rapes and gropings in central and southwestern Brooklyn that began earlier this year.
Federico Chamorro Yax – who lives in Bensonhurst – was arrested in his apartment on Sunday night. Police believe he may also be responsible for a September 4, attack on a 30-year-old woman near his home.
During the September sexual assault a man forced his hand up the woman’s skirt.
Yax reportedly attacked two 22-year-old women in Sunset Park on Sunday. The victims fought back and managed to injure their attacker. Hours after the episode, police found Yax at home still bleeding from the fight.
Police have been searching for suspects connected to a series of sexual assaults being reported in Brooklyn, specifically Park Slope, Sunset Park, and other nearby neighborhoods. As of September 23, ten attacks had been reported since March and have contributed to a rise in subway crime.
Police say that it is still unknown however, whether or not Yax can be connected to the Park Slope attacks, which have generated a wave of community action to fight against sexual predators including a 300 person rally and volunteer escort services to protect women walking home from subway stations.
The above video, posted online by ABC 7, shows images of Yax in custody.
Here at Bensonhurst Bean, we’ve been in a sentimental mood lately.
Your humble blogger figured, what better way to wrap up the week than with a video of a classic performance from right here on the streets of Bensonhurst?
With so many of Brooklyn’s old record shops, like Zig Zag on Avenue U, closing down, it’s very heartening to know that a place like Rhythm Records still exists.
The above video, posted on YouTube by wtesoro, captures the divine sounds of Lisa and the Lovetones, performing Little Boy & Girl.
Have a great weekend!
Rhythm Records is located at 181 Avenue S, between West 7th Street and West 8th Street. Their phone number is (718) 375-1861
According to the information available on YouTube, Lisa and the Lovetones may be reached for gigs at (973) 873-1489
[UPDATE] 3:45 p.m.
As an encore, here’s another video taken that day we also enjoyed very much!
If it seemed like the “Memories of Brooklyn” video we posted last Tuesday ended a bit abruptly, that’s because it was merely a shortened version of the original.
The video is actually named Brooklyn We Had It All. Its author Lou Rizzo was kind enough to reach out to Bensonhurst Bean and offer us the original full length version, which he posted on YouTube late last night.
“I originally did it to show the youngsters of this generation how simple life was,” Rizzo told Bensonhurst Bean. “How we didn’t need today’s technology to have a good time and how we had everything we needed right in front of us. No need to leave Brooklyn…”
Sharing this video with the world via the internet is a clever move on Lou’s part. He uses today’s information age technology like a Trojan Horse, showing us in music and images how, in so many ways, we were happier without it.
The above video, created by Lou Rizzo, is dedicated to his cousin Susan Pugliese, who, in Lou’s words, “taught me more about life through example than any book, school or teacher could ever have.”
