JoAnn from Bensonhurst is an internet phenomena. The wife and mother turned local commentator always has something colorful to say.

Here’s Joanne’s latest viral rant about where to stick your money. You tell ‘em JoAnn.

Bensonhurst locals are a colorful bunch. It’s time someone took notice. This is us, taking notice.

Joann from Bensonhurst is a real tough cookie. This mom and housewife has been telling it like it is in her own Youtube webisode series after a fortunate encounter with a news producer who needed someone to fill a spot for a segment. She dishes out advice on everything from cheating spouses to traditional Italian meatball recipes, and she never bites her tongue.

Viewers love her salt of the earth attitude. She has over 309 thousand hits on her Youtube videos and soon, Joann may be getting her own TV show.

We sat her down for a few questions. Lets see what Joann has to say.

In the above video, State Senator Marty Golden discusses tougher vandalism laws and cracking down on auto insurance fraud in New York State.

State Senator Marty Golden represents Senate District 22, which includes Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Gerritsen Beach and Marine Park; as well as parts of Bensonhurst, Midwood, Gravesend, and Sheepshead Bay.

As word spreads that Governor Andrew Cuomo may go for the New York State Legislature’s most recent redistricting proposals – despite eery similarities to earlier proposals he had vowed to veto – two local pols debate the pros and cons of a “Super-Jewish” State Senate district stretching from Borough Park to Marine Park. In the above video, posted on website Politics On The Hudson, State Senator Diane Savino speaks at a rally for the New York State Professional Firefighters Association outside the State Capitol in Albany.

Savino, a former labor leader, defends public pensions and comments on the state of the American labor movement in what blogger Joseph Spector describes as a fiery speech. Continue Reading »

So while we had a little snafu getting the name “Bensonhurst Bean” into the segment, they did manage to make me look fairly knowledgeable about neighborhood architecture in between all the Three Stooges impersonations.

In the above video, yours truly pounds the pavement with veteran TV reporter Chauncey Howell and an excellent camera man whose name I regretfully forgot in the commotion of filming. It was fun admiring the handsome homes, as well as the warm, witty people of Bensonhurst.

We spent some time in the low 60′s off Bay Parkway, 17th Avenue between 81st Street and 83rd Street and various spots along 18th Avenue – including a trip to Villabate Alba Bakery (7001 18th Ave).

Big up to my Aunt Rita who happened to make a quick cameo as she was walking down the block!

Last night while I was watching the Oscars with friends, I noticed that a featured montage of great Hollywood films included a few seconds of the famous car chase scene from the French Connection. The film, which starred Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider (the police chief from Jaws), included a very thrilling chase scene shot under the elevated tracks of the West End Line on 86th Street and New Utrecht Avenue.

In honor of the mention, we’ve posted a short tribute to the movie above, which was uploaded to YouTube by ThorC1138.

VIDEO: The Brooklyn Way

“Spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way.”

-Biggie Smalls aka Notorious B.I.G.

We’re gonna leave you with a video – guest starring Everlast of House of Pain fame – that was also the theme song from an eponymous, short-lived reality show which followed the lives of Kaves aka Michael McLeer, and his brother DJ ADM from the Hip Hop/Rock group The Lordz.

This video was first recommended to us by Erica Sherman from Sheepshead Bites, who prefers to see their more sensitive side.

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

The above video was posted on Bay Ridge Odyssey, a reincarnation of website BKSouthie. Brian Hedden, the site’s publisher (as well as a former blogger for Bensonhurst Bean), had vowed to change its Bostonesque brand name if the Giants won the Super Bowl.

We all wish Brian the best of luck with the new name.

The Bean team also hopes residents of “Beantown” can look past our site’s own curious handle – which has nothing to do with Boston and is actually an acronym for Business, Entertainment, Arts, and News. So there.

The above video features Andrew Gounardes – who is expected to officially announce his entry into the race for Marty Golden’s state senate seat tomorrow – telling voters why he should be Brooklyn’s voice in Albany.

Feel free to voice your opinions on Gounardes and/or Golden in the comments below.
